If you are using a USB<br \/>\nInterface, a message like this should pop up:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-2.jpg 372w, https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-2-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The drivers many install automatically in Windows 7 or Vista. If you are using XP or W2000, click on the Found New Hardware message and the Found New Hardware Wizard should start up. If you are prompted with the choice, pick \u201cNo, Not This Time\u201d when asked if you want to connect to the Internet to search for drivers. Select \u201cInstall the software automatically (Recommended)\u201d then click [Next &gt;]<br \/>\nThe process should be automated but you may need to click \u201cContinue Anyway\u201d part way through the process.<\/p>\n<p>If, for some reason, you installed the USB Interface without following the above instructions, and VCDS does not work correctly, go into your PC\u2019s Device Manager while the USB Interface is connected.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the Device Manager by right-clicking on My Computer in XP or on Computer in Vista or 7. Select Manage to bring up Computer Management. On the left side of the screen under System Tools, select Device Manager.<\/p>\n<p>Find the \u201cVCDS Compatible USB Interface\u201d or similar and delete it. It may be under \u201cOther Devices\u201d or under \u201cUniversal Serial Bus Controllers\u201d. Next, unplug the USB Interface from your PC, wait 5 seconds and plug it back in.<\/p>\n<p>Connect the car end of your Interface to your vehicle\u2019s Diagnostic Port.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16104\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-3.jpg 359w, https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-3-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your vehicle has a 2\u00d72 port (some pre-1996 vehicles), then use the optional 2\u00d72 Adapter between the Interface and the ports in the car. Make sure the key is turned far enough that the dash lights are fully illuminated. The engine may either be running or stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Start the VCDS program on your PC through either the Start Menu or the VCDS icon on your Desktop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16106\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the Main Screen in VCDS click the [Options] button to go into the Options screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-6.jpg 661w, https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-6-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 661px) 100vw, 661px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you are in the Options Screen,Select the correct port for your PC\u2019s USB Port (USB) or Serial Port (typically COM1 or COM2) and click the [Test] button. Ensure that VCDS finds your interface.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16108\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-7.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.obd2tool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/How-to-Configure-VCDS-Diagnostic-Cable-for-Your-Laptop-7-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should see a message like this:<br \/>\nIf the Interface Status is \u201cNot Found!\u201d,check the connections at the car and PC.Make sure both are plugged in securely.Serial Interfaces get their power from the vehicle so they will not be recognized at all if not plugged into a car.<br \/>\nAdapter Type should always be \u201cRossTech\u201d followed by the name of the Interface such as \u201cHEX-USB+CAN\u201d.<br \/>\nVersion indicates the firmware version of your Interface. Click on [Select] to view the Select Control Module Screen.
