Issue: CAT ET 2019C Cannot Support CAT 259D ECM
A customer recently installed CAT ET 2019C diagnostic software and followed our installation video successfully. However, when connecting the service tool to a 2014 CAT 259D skid steer loader, the software displayed the following message:
“This ECM control 259D is not supported. Please ensure the latest version of service tool is installed.”
The customer was confused because the machine was a 2014 model, and CAT ET 2019C seemed like it should support it.

Machine Information
- Machine: CAT 259D Skid Steer Loader
- Year: 2014
- Software Used First: CAT ET 2019C
- Problem: ECM not supported message
- Final Working Software: CAT ET 2025C
Why CAT ET 2019C May Not Support CAT 259D
After checking the issue, our engineer explained that there are usually two possible reasons for this error.
1. The Engine May Not Be a CAT Engine
Some Caterpillar machines may use engine configurations or ECM types that are not fully covered by older CAT ET versions. If the engine or control module is not recognized correctly, the service tool may report that the ECM is unsupported.
2. CAT ET 2019C May Not Include the Required License or Support File
Even if the machine model year is 2014, the ECM support depends on the software database, license coverage, and service tool version. In this case, CAT ET 2019C did not have the correct support for this special ECM control, so the customer was advised to try CAT ET 2025C / newer CAT ET version.
Solution: Upgrade to CAT ET 2025C
After switching to CAT ET 2025C version, the customer successfully connected to the CAT 259D.
The customer confirmed:
“Yes, it worked. I connected to my CAT 259D and was able to calibrate the inclinometer sensor. It worked perfectly. Strange how it needed the 2025 version, but glad it’s working now.”
This confirms that the issue was not caused by the adapter or installation process. The main problem was the software version and license support.
Result: Inclinometer Sensor Calibration Completed
With CAT ET 2025C, the customer was able to:
- Connect to the CAT 259D ECM
- Access the required machine system
- Perform inclinometer sensor calibration
- Complete the calibration successfully

For CAT compact machines such as skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, and similar equipment, using a newer CAT ET version can be important when the older software shows an ECM support error.
Additional Question: Return to Dig Feature Requires Factory Password
After solving the connection issue, the customer needed access to enable the Return to Dig feature. In that section, CAT ET requested a 10-character factory password.
For authorized service use, you can press:
Ctrl + F2
This opens the 10-character factory password generator in supported CAT ET software versions. Use this only when you are authorized to make configuration changes on the machine.
If the password tool is not available or the function is restricted, contact your supplier or Caterpillar service support for assistance.
Conclusion
CAT ET 2019C may not fully support every ECM on a 2014 CAT 259D skid steer, even if the machine year appears to be older than the software version. In this real case, the error message was solved by upgrading to CAT ET 2025C / newer CAT ET version, which allowed the customer to connect successfully and calibrate the inclinometer sensor.
If you see the message “ECM not supported, please ensure latest version of service tool installed”, the recommended solution is to try a newer CAT ET version with the correct license coverage.

FAQ
Does CAT ET 2019C support CAT 259D 2014?
It may not fully support all CAT 259D ECM configurations. In this case, CAT ET 2019C showed an ECM unsupported error, while CAT ET 2025C / newer CAT ET version worked successfully.
Why does CAT ET say the ECM is not supported?
This usually happens when the software version does not include the required ECM support, license coverage, or database file. It may also happen if the engine or ECM configuration is different from standard CAT coverage.
Can CAT ET CAT ET 2025C / newer CAT ET version work with CAT 259D?
Yes. In this case, CAT ET 2025C version connected successfully to the CAT 259D and allowed the customer to calibrate the inclinometer sensor.
Why does Return to Dig require a factory password?
Some CAT machine configuration functions are protected and require a factory password before changes can be made. This helps prevent unauthorized or incorrect machine parameter changes.
How do I open the CAT ET factory password generator?
In supported CAT ET software versions, you can press Ctrl + F2 to open the 10-bit factory password generator. Use it only for authorized service work.
